The world's thinnest known optical crystal is here! fluorinated hexagonal boron nitride

On the quartz plate, the edge rhombic boron nitride crystal with a density of only 1 to 3 microns is as thin as a cicada's wing. Still, its power efficiency is 100 to 10,000 times more than that of traditional optical crystals. This is the thinnest well-known optical crystal worldwide created by Chinese researchers. At the opening event of the 2024 Zhongguancun Online forum Yearly Meeting hung on April 25, this crystal was launched as a significant accomplishment.

Academician Wang Enge of the Quantum Materials Scientific Research Center of the Institution of Physics of Peking College, Professor Liu Kaihui of the Institute of Condensed Issue Physics and Products Physics, and Hong Hao, a specially selected associate researcher, and other researchers have produced a new crystal layout technique: by transforming each item of rhombic boron nitride product at a particular angle like turning a Rubik's Cube, the stacked optical crystal can minimize the energy consumption of laser passing through and successfully produce the required laser.

The crystal layout concept pioneered by Chinese scientists is combined with the prep work technique to successfully "lose weight" the optical crystal to 1 to 3 microns. The thickness of standard optical crystals remains in the millimeter to centimeter level.

The r & d team summarized this approach as the interface angle theory of two-dimensional products. "The application of this concept is expected to decrease the dimension of lasers to the micron degree. Some products that were difficult to make optical crystals in the past are likewise anticipated ahead back to life by rotating the angle of product piling," Liu Kaihui informed reporters.
